Q & A with Azelle

IW: What would you do during a typical day?

AZELLE: I always like to start my day with a cup of coffee, spending time with my husband to catch up on what the day will bring.  I manage 3 offices and sell in my own residential area.  Therefore I need to structure and plan well.  I normally have my week planned and revise the following day’s calendar the night before.  If I visit the 3 offices, I always do a scenic route along the seaside – it just puts my mind at ease to be ready for the day.  While on the road, I make phone calls to clients and my team.  I am quite involved with Auctions and that calls for preparation and planning.  I do the social media in my 3 offices. I do have quite a varied role in our business which allows me to stay in touch with most aspects of the business and the people in our team.  I do make time for myself – I play tennis twice a week where the score just never matters – it really is all about being outdoors and the company.

IW: How did you get into this industry?

AZELLE: I was a teacher for nine years.  I’ve always been career driven and needed a change.  My husband was in the real estate industry for about a year before I decided to make a career change.  I always wanted a shop on the corner. I never knew what I was going to do in that shop on the corner, but I knew I would figure it out when I do get that shop on the corner!  Our 1st own office was an office on the corner and the rest just happened.  From starting real estate in 2004 my husband and I are now the proud owners of three offices together with our partners in our Mauritius office.

IW: What do you enjoy most about your job?

AZELLE:  I can essentially earn as much as I want to.  I can plan my day and can be flexible when needed.  The dynamics of real estate – clients and team members are diverse.  It keeps things interesting, and I do enjoy continuous learning as new challenges and opportunities arise from day to day.

IW: What is the most challenging part of your job?

AZELLE:   Working with so many people – different generations and different genders and so many different personalities.  The challenge sometimes is to accommodate all those personalities to keep the dynamics and team spirit healthy.  And for that reason, we have solid structures with rules in place – because CLEAR is KIND.

IW: What advice would you give others that are looking to move into this industry?

AZELLE:  Winners always get the Lion’s share.  So if you want to have the lion’s share you have to be disciplined and be prepared to learn all the time.  Have a positive attitude and be willing to adapt to change – it happens more than often. Back yourself!
