Fight Night by Miriam Toews

Elvira, raised in a strict religious community, has fought for her independence, joy, and family throughout her life. Despite failing health, she helps her pregnant daughter and spirited granddaughter, who live together in a cramped Toronto home.

The novel alternates between Swiv's enthusiastic and precocious voice and her grandmother's indomitable spirit, and it is a tribute to mothers, grandmothers, and all the women who continue to fight - with pain and ferocity - for a way to live on their own terms.
